Reference media guidelines: Runway Recipes and Sume checks
Runway's guide says strong references drive quality. On Sume, add the checks the docs list: public HTTPS URLs, per-model reference types, 3-second video refs.

Runway's reference media guide says references are the biggest lever on output quality: use the highest-resolution source, keep one clear subject, light it evenly and avoid clutter. The same habits help on Sume. Sume adds checks Runway's page does not cover: reference URLs must be public HTTPS, each model accepts only some reference types, and Gemini Omni video references are limited to 3 seconds each.
Runway rules are from its guide; Sume rules from Video generation and the Video Router docs, read 2026-10-01.
What does Runway say makes a good reference?
The guide lists resolution, isolation, lighting and one subject per reference. For product images it adds: center the product, prefer a plain background, and avoid heavy reflections, watermarks or overlaid text. For reference videos it asks for stable footage with steady motion over shaky or rapidly cut clips. For people, it says to use only references you have permission to depict.
What does Sume check on top of that?
| Rule | Where it applies |
|---|---|
| Reference images must be reachable over public HTTPS | Troubleshooting for failed video jobs |
reference_image_urls up to 10 | reference_to_video on gemini-omni-flash-1.1 |
reference_video_urls up to 3, each 3 s or shorter | Same capability |
| Audio and video references honored by Seedance 2.x, Wan 3.0, MiniMax H3 and H3 Max | Other models may not accept them |
| Gemini Omni Flash 1.1 takes video references but not audio | supported_input_references |
How do I avoid a failed job?
Open each URL in a private browser window before submitting. If it asks for a login or lives on localhost, Sume cannot read it. Then read supported_input_references for the model you picked, because only a model that lists a type accepts that type. The docs also say to use high-quality, relevant reference images; that matches Runway's advice.
Do I need rights to the people in a reference?
Runway's guide puts the responsibility for likeness rights on the submitter. Treat the same rule as yours when you send a face to any generator. This is a practical note, not legal advice. For video clip limits, see the 3-second limit per clip.

- Runway Recipe tasks vs Sume jobs: waiting on the result
A Runway Recipe returns a task you poll at GET /v1/tasks/{id}. A Sume generation returns a job: read status, fetch the result, never treat queued as failed.
- Runway SAFETY.INPUT credits not refunded: what Sume does
Runway does not refund credits for SAFETY.INPUT failures. Sume's docs describe one rule for failed jobs: the reservation is released or refunded.
- Seedance 2.5 1080p ratio 1920:1080 on Sume: resolution + aspect_ratio
Runway takes a 1080p ratio like 1920:1080. Sume takes two fields instead: resolution 1080p plus aspect_ratio 16:9, and rejects size on v1.
- Seedance 2.5 extend mode without ratio: how to continue a clip on Sume
Runway's extend mode needs promptText and no ratio. Sume has no extend flag: continue a clip with a first_frame image or a Video Router video_url edit.
