A music teacher can join 12 student recital clips of 10 seconds each into a 2-minute reel for $0.56 on Sume: twelve trims ($0.24), twelve audio detaches ($0.12) and one Timeline render ($0.20), since 120 seconds bills as two minutes (read 2026-10-03).

December recitals are the last public event of the term for many studios, and the families who could not come want to see it. A reel sent in the week after the concert is more personal than a full recording.

Keeping each child's real sound

Timeline plays one audio spine, so to keep the music from each clip you build the spine from parts. Trim each performance with video trim. Detach the audio of each trimmed clip as wav. Then give the render audio.parts[] with those twelve URLs and durations, and twelve video[] slots with matching start and duration values. The limit is 20 parts, so twelve fits.

Add a fade transition between clips so the cuts do not feel abrupt. The default output is vertical, so for a landscape concert recording set output.width to 1920 and height to 1080, or use fit: blur on vertical phone clips shown in a landscape reel.

Permission comes first

These are children. Get a guardian's written permission for each clip before it goes into a shared reel, and send the reel only to the families, not to a public feed, unless every permission says public. Do not caption names onto the video unless a family has agreed to it.

Cut with care for fairness: every child gets the same 10 seconds, and the same slot style. A rerun after one family withdraws permission is cheap: trim and detach are already done for the other eleven, and the render is $0.20 (read 2026-10-03). Check live prices in GET /v1/catalog if you plan more than one reel.

Budget and checks before you start

Record each performance from the same spot with the phone in landscape, and say the student's first name aloud only if the family has agreed. Then set aside ten minutes to trim: each trim only needs a start and a duration, and for 12 clips the whole routine takes about as long as the recital took to play.

Name each file by performance order, since the render slots follow the list you give. A small studio of 12 students runs this reel for about the price of a coffee, so repeat it each term. Remember that arrangements and pieces may be under copyright, so share the reel privately with families.
