Luma Ray 3.2 video_reframe: 10-second source, no 1080p vertical
Luma's video_reframe outpaints a source of 10 seconds or less, with no 1080p for 9:16 or 3:4. Sume crops a hosted clip instead of generating new edges.

Luma's video_reframe outpaints an existing video to a new aspect ratio, so the model invents the newly exposed canvas. The source must be 10 seconds or shorter, and 1080p is not yet available for 9:16 and 3:4 targets. Sume does not outpaint: it crops a Sume-hosted clip.
Luma's limits are from its reframe guide; Sume's from the Video filter docs, read 2026-10-01.
What are Luma's reframe limits?
| Item | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Behavior | Outpaints to a new target aspect ratio; source content is preserved frame-for-frame |
| Source length | 10 seconds or shorter |
| 1080p | Landscape and square only; 9:16 and 3:4 not yet available |
| Vertical targets | Use 720p, 540p or 360p |
| Placement | Optional video.source_position rectangle; default is a centered fit |
What does Sume do instead?
Video filter 1.0 takes one Sume-hosted clip and applies a crop op, with x, y, width and height as fractions of the source frame, then returns a new MP4. The source is untouched. Nothing is generated to fill space: you keep a region of what is already there. The docs list a source cap of 300 seconds.

"ops": [{ "op": "crop", "x": 0.34, "y": 0, "width": 0.32, "height": 1 }]
}'How do I get a vertical 9:16 result?
Crop a centered column from a landscape clip, as above. The crop is a fraction, so the width fraction for 9:16 from 16:9 is about 0.316. Timeline 1.0's default output is 1080x1920 MP4, so a cropped clip placed in a timeline renders vertical. Use POST /v1/video-filter/check first; it is unbilled.

When is outpainting the better fit?
When you must keep the whole frame and accept generated edges. Cropping drops the sides. If the subject spans the width, a crop will cut it, so check the framing before you choose.
