Instagram Audio API for Reels ads: prepare the video side

Meta's Instagram Audio API can find royalty-free replacements for copyrighted Reels music. Sume does not call it, but can drop the audio from your video.

Sume does not call Meta's Instagram Audio API. What Sume can do is prepare the video: POST /v1/video-trim with audio: "drop" returns a new MP4 without the original audio, and POST /v1/audio-detach pulls the existing track out as wav or mp3. Finding and attaching the replacement is done through Meta.

Instagram facts are from the Instagram Platform changelog and Sume facts from Video trim and Audio detach, read 2026-09-30. This is not legal or licensing advice.

What did Meta add?

The changelog describes an Instagram Audio API dated 2026-06-01, for apps using Facebook Login. It lets an app search for and retrieve audio, meaning original sounds from Reels and royalty-free music from Meta's Sound Collection, and attach it to Reels at creation time. It also adds an ads use case: when a Reel contains copyrighted music, the app can find royalty-free Sound Collection tracks to replace it.

Which part does Sume handle?

Division of work for a Reels audio swap, from the sources read 2026-09-30.

How do I drop the audio?

Import the clip, then trim with no change to the range you want. The audio field is keep by default or drop. With precision: "exact" the cut is re-encoded, and a trim needs start and exactly one of end or duration, so pass the clip's full length as end. You get a new file; the source is untouched.

curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/video-trim \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: reel-mute-001" \
  -d '{
    "video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/reel.mp4",
    "start": 0,
    "end": 30,
    "audio": "drop"
  }'

Will this make the Reel safe to run?

Sume makes no claim about rights clearance, and dropping audio does not decide what Meta permits. Use Meta's own documentation for the Audio API's requirements. For general audio replacement outside Meta's flow, see replace or remove audio in a video.
