Ideogram 4.0 has no references; 4.5 takes five. What Sume lists

Ideogram's docs say 4.0 and 3.0 accept no reference images and 4.5 accepts five. Sume lists Ideogram 4.5 and 3; how its edit and reference call works.

Ideogram's reference image page lists which models take references: Ideogram 4.5 up to 5 images, and "Ideogram 4.0, 3.0, Z-Image, P-Image" none. It also says that on 4.5, attaching references turns your text into an edit instruction, removes Magic Prompt and adds a Very low quality option in the Ideogram app.

That matters for API planning: if you pick the older model for a reference-driven job, the older model will not use your references.

What Sume lists

The Sume catalog has ideogram/ideogram-v3 and ideogram/ideogram-v4.5; there is no 4.0 id. For 4.5, the repo's API notes describe two fal endpoints behind one id: text-to-image when you send no input_references, and an edit endpoint when you do. The first reference is the image to edit, and up to 4 more are references, so the descriptor maximum is 5.

An edit call

Send the image you want edited first, then up to four style or object references:

curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/images \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"model":"ideogram/ideogram-v4.5","prompt":"Replace the sign text with SALE","quality":"medium","input_references":[{"type":"image_url","image_url":{"url":"https://example.com/shop.jpg"}}]}'

Choosing

If your plan says Ideogram 4.0, check what you need from it. For text-in-image layouts, use 4.5 or v3 on Sume; for edits, 4.5 is the only Ideogram id that takes more than a source image.

How this was checked

Vendor facts come from the pages listed in the sources, read on 2026-10-05. Sume facts come from the Image API docs and the catalog code on main on the same date. Catalogs and limits change, so read the descriptors from GET /v1/images/models before you pin a number in production code.
