How long can a Reel be? 3 minutes, and what each render costs
A Reel can run up to 3 minutes as reported in October 2026. A Sume Timeline render of that length costs $0.30, billed at $0.10 per output minute rounded up.

A Reel can be up to 3 minutes long, according to Metricool's Instagram news (read 2026-10-03), which describes Reels as running from 3 seconds to 3 minutes. If you assemble Reels with Sume's Timeline 1.0, a render of 3 minutes costs $0.30, because Timeline bills $0.10 per output minute rounded up.
That is the render only. Voice, music and any generated clips are separate jobs with their own prices, and the ones Sume publishes as fixed numbers are listed further down.
What Instagram says about length
Instagram's own Reels guide (read 2026-10-03) groups lengths by purpose: 3 to 15 seconds for quick transitions, trends and punchy one-liners; 15 to 60 seconds for tutorials, day-in-my-life clips and most creative formats; and 60 seconds to 3 minutes for longer storytelling, walkthroughs and detailed how-tos. Treat these as the platform's guidance rather than a rule about what performs, because the guide does not publish retention data.
Timeline cost by Reel length
Timeline's public rate is $0.10 per ceil(output minute), and the render reserves ceil(audio.duration_seconds / 60) minutes up front. The planning call POST /v1/timeline-1.0/plan is unbilled and returns billable_minutes and estimated_cost_usd_micros for any slot list before you pay.
| Reel length | Billable minutes | Render cost |
|---|---|---|
| 15 s | 1 | $0.10 |
| 30 s | 1 | $0.10 |
| 60 s | 1 | $0.10 |
| 61 s | 2 | $0.20 |
| 90 s | 2 | $0.20 |
| 120 s | 2 | $0.20 |
| 150 s | 3 | $0.30 |
| 180 s | 3 | $0.30 |
The other fixed prices on the same Reel
From Sume's docs: Timeline audio concat is a flat $0.01; Video trim is $0.02 per job; Video filter is $0.02 per encode job and its check is free; Audio detach is $0.01 per job; Music generation is $0.125 per accepted generation; and speech-to-text on a clip is $0.01 per audio minute. Video captions and avatar videos are priced by their own rate cards, which you can read from GET /v1/catalog.
So a 3-minute Reel with one music bed and one joined voice file adds $0.125 for the music and $0.01 for the join to the $0.30 render, before the voice itself.
What Sume does and does not do
Sume renders the file at up to 1800 seconds of spine, defaults to 1080x1920 MP4, and returns a durable URL. It does not enforce Instagram's 3-minute ceiling for you, and it does not publish the Reel. Keep audio.duration_seconds at 180 or below for a Reel, and check the length of the result before upload.
