Google Play feature graphic size (1024×500) and AI images

Google Play asks for a 1024×500 feature graphic. Sume's ChatGPT Image 2.5 cannot output that exact size, so generate the same shape larger and resize.

A Google Play feature graphic is 1024 by 500 pixels, in JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha. Sume's ChatGPT Image 2.5 cannot output exactly that size, because 500 is not a multiple of 16 and 1024×500 is below the model's 655,360-pixel floor. Generate the same shape larger, for example 1168×576, then resize it to 1024×500 in your own editor.

Google's numbers are quoted from Play Console Help, which can change; Sume's rules come from the Image API docs. Both were read 2026-09-29.

What does Google Play require?

The page says a feature graphic is required to publish a store listing. Its requirements are the file type and the size.

From Play Console Help, read 2026-09-29. Quoted as the vendor states it.
RequirementGoogle Play
File typeJPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha)
Dimensions1024px by 500px
Placement adviceKeep prominent visuals and the focal point towards the center of the graphic; avoid key elements in the cutoff zones.

Why can't ChatGPT Image 2.5 make 1024×500 exactly?

The docs give four custom-size rules for image_size. 1024×500 passes two and fails two.

Rules from Image API and Image API parameters, applied to 1024×500 on 2026-09-29.
Rule1024×500Result
Both edges multiples of 161024 ÷ 16 = 64, 500 ÷ 16 = 31.25Fails
Longest edge at most 38401024Passes
Aspect ratio at most 3:12.048:1Passes
655,360 to 8,294,400 pixels512,000Fails

What size should I generate instead?

Ask for the same shape at a size that passes. The smallest one within 1% of 1024:500 that meets all four rules is 1168×576. Send it as image_size and ask for a file type Google accepts.

The image comes back at that size, not at 1024×500. For ChatGPT Image 2.5 the requested size must pass the rules above, so the last step, scaling down to 1024×500, happens in your own editor. The Image Upscale route only enlarges, with a factor from 1 to 4, so it is not the tool for shrinking.

  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "openai/gpt-image-2.5",
    "prompt": "Wide app banner: a calm hiking trail at sunrise, subject centered, soft background at the edges, no text",
    "image_size": { "width": 1168, "height": 576 },
    "output_format": "png"
  }'

Where does Google Play show the feature graphic?

Google's page says the graphic is displayed in various places on Google Play, including as the cover image for a preview video, if you have one, and in large-format collections of apps and groups of recommended games. That is why the page tells you to keep the focal point near the center: the same picture is cropped differently from place to place.

Design for the middle of the frame and let the edges carry only background. Because you are generating larger than 1024×500 and scaling down, fine details shrink too, and the page itself advises against overloading the graphic with them.

What should I check before I upload?

  • Open the final file and confirm it is exactly 1024×500 with no transparency.
  • Keep the logo, app name and main UI away from the edges, since Google says the cutoff zones may hide them.
  • Look for garbled words. Ask for no text in the prompt and add any words yourself.
