fal AI vs Runway: a model host or a model maker's API

fal runs 1,000+ models from many labs and bills video per second or per video. Runway's API offers its own Gen-4.5 and more, billed in $0.01 credits.

fal and Runway both sell AI video generation by API, but they are different kinds of company. fal is a hosting platform: it runs 1,000+ image, video, audio and 3D models behind one API, bills video per second or per video, and also rents GPUs for your own apps. Runway's API offers Runway's own flagship models, Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0, lists other video models beside them, and bills everything in credits that cost $0.01 each.

Every vendor fact below comes from fal's and Runway's own pages, read on 2026-09-28 and listed under Sources. The Sume line comes from Video generation. Neither vendor is ranked here.

How do fal and Runway compare?

From fal's home page, pricing and webhooks docs, and Runway's models, pricing, SDKs and Using the API pages, read 2026-09-28.

How does billing differ between fal and Runway?

fal prices each model in dollars by what it outputs. Its pricing page says video models are billed by output unit, per second or per video depending on the model, and normalizes its examples to output per $1, based on an estimated 5-second video at 720p.

Runway prices each model in credits. At $0.01 a credit, gen4.5 at 12 credits per second works out to $0.12 per second. Some rates add inputs: seedance2_5 at 720p costs 30 credits per second of output plus 15 per second of input and reference video, with an 80-credit minimum per generation. Generations sent through a Model Router bill at the chosen model's standard rate, and the response reports the model used and the realized cost.

Because both price per model, compare the exact model and resolution you plan to use on each pricing page, on the same day.

How do you get the finished video from each API?

Both are asynchronous: fal queues the request and can POST the result to your webhook_url, while Runway returns a task you poll with GET /v1/tasks/{id} or an SDK helper. Does Runway have an API? walks through Runway's task states, and fal vs Replicate covers fal's queue and webhooks.

Should I pick fal or Runway?

  • Pick fal if you want one account across many labs' image, video and audio models with per-output billing, or GPU capacity to run a model of your own.
  • Pick Runway if you want Runway's own Gen-4.5 or Aleph 2.0, with the ProRes and PNG-sequence delivery Runway offers on those two models and HDR on Gen-4.5, or a Model Router that chooses among its listed models.
  • If the model you need appears on both, price that exact model and resolution on both pages first.

Where does Sume fit?

Sume is a third pattern: one catalog of video models behind POST /v1/videos, which returns a job ID and polling URL immediately. Video is reserved on submit at provider list × 1.25, plus a 5.5% agent fee by default (Video generation). Sume vs fal and Does Runway have an API? go deeper on each vendor.
