How big should the EU AI icon be on a video? No number given

The EC only says clearly visible size and gives no pixels. With Sume Timeline compose, width_ratio sets the badge width as a share of frame width.

There is no required size. The European Commission's icons page says only that "The icon should be in a clearly visible size", with no pixels or percentage. If you add the icon with Sume, width_ratio sets its width as a share of the frame width, from 0.05 to 1, and the plate keeps its aspect ratio. Choosing a value is your call; this is not legal advice.

The EC page was last updated 24 September 2026 and also asks that any accompanying label use plain language. Sume details are from Timeline compose, read 2026-09-30.

What does width_ratio do?

In overlay mode, width_ratio is "0.05 to 1 of width (default 0.9)", and the plate, the still you import, keeps its aspect. The default of 0.9 is far wider than a small badge, so set it explicitly. The default output frame is 1080 by 1920; set output.width and output.height to match your video so it is not rescaled twice.

How wide is each ratio on a 1080 px frame?

Width in pixels is the ratio times 1080. These are arithmetic on the default frame, not a compliance threshold.

width_ratio on the default 1080 by 1920 frame, computed 2026-09-30 from https://docs.sume.com/models/timeline-compose.
width_ratioBadge width at 1080 pxShare of frame width
0.05 (minimum)54 px5%
0.15162 px15%
0.25270 px25%
0.40432 px40%
0.90 (default)972 px90%

How do I judge clearly visible?

Render a test and look at it on a phone at normal viewing size, since the EC wording is qualitative. Check the icon at a small preview, and keep it clear of other elements; see keeping captions off the label. margin_ratio (0 to 0.45 of height, default 0.05) controls the distance from the edge.

What do I need to run compose?

The plate must be a still imported to media.sume.com with POST /v1/media-imports; so must the video. Send an Idempotency-Key. The docs list a public rate of $0.02 per job. For the full first-frame recipe see the EU AI icon burned into the first frame.
