Deleting a Shorts episode renumbers the rest: skip burned-in numbers

YouTube renumbers other episodes when you edit or delete one. Keep episode numbers out of rendered pixels, or one deletion means re-rendering a season.

What happens to episode numbers when you delete one?

They shift. YouTube's page says editing or deleting an episode's number or season automatically updates the episode numbers assigned to other episodes. Delete episode 3 of 8 and the old episode 4 becomes 3.

Any video that says "Episode 4" in its own pixels is now wrong, and the only fix is another render and another upload.

Where numbers can safely live

The show page already shows the number, so the video does not need to. Put the number in the metadata, the show structure and the custom thumbnail, which YouTube lets you set per Short in a series, and keep the video itself free of it.

If a visible title is wanted, use a name instead: a case name, a topic, a place. Names survive renumbering.

How to build episodes that do not date themselves

Sume's video captions job takes a style and design in its request, so you can keep a consistent caption look across a season without writing the episode number into the text. Captions are billed per job, so check the live price in the catalog.

On the Timeline side, one render per episode with an idempotency key means a replacement episode is one new job, not a season rebuild. The assembly rate is $0.10 per output minute, rounded up.

  • Say "last time" instead of "episode 3".
  • Use a recurring series name in captions, not a counter.
  • Keep the counter in a spreadsheet and in YouTube Studio only.

A deletion checklist

Before deleting, list which later episodes refer to the one you remove. If a later Short depends on it, re-cut that one first. Afterward, open the show and confirm the numbers are what you expect.

If you must keep a visible counter, accept the cost: every renumber triggers new renders for each affected episode. Plan for that with the unbilled plan call, which returns the estimated cost for each episode before you submit anything.
