Comfy Agent vs an MCP agent for image and video work

Comfy Agent builds and runs ComfyUI graphs for you in Comfy Cloud; an MCP agent calls hosted tools like Sume's. What differs in control, billing and location.

Pick Comfy Agent when the thing you want to make and keep is a ComfyUI graph: it plans, builds, validates and runs workflows on the canvas while you edit. Pick an MCP agent, such as Claude Code or Codex connected to Sume's hosted MCP, when you want finished images, clips, audio and jobs by tool call, with no graph to maintain. They answer different questions: Comfy Agent edits a node graph in Comfy; an MCP agent calls a catalog of hosted tools.

Comfy Agent was reported on October 1, 2026 in The Neuron's digest (a news summary, not a vendor spec). The Comfy facts below come from Comfy's Agent docs and Comfy MCP docs, read 2026-10-03; the Sume facts come from Sume's docs.

How do they differ?

The comparison below sticks to what each vendor's own docs say. Where a docs page did not answer a question, the cell says so instead of guessing.

Comfy Agent and Sume's hosted MCP, from vendor docs, read 2026-10-03.
QuestionComfy AgentSume hosted MCP
What does it produce?Workflows: finds templates, models and nodes, builds from a template, edits nodes, validates, runs, returns outputsJobs: generate_image, generate_video, music_create, tts_create, stt_create, Avatar tools and more
Where does it run?Generally available in Comfy Cloud; the docs say the agent inside Comfy Desktop on local is coming soonSume's hosted endpoint at mcp.sume.com/mcp, from any remote MCP client
Who drives it?An agent inside Comfy, on your canvas, in several chats at onceThe agent in your own client: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and others
How is a run approved?Run permissions are Ask (approval per run) or AutoOAuth Read by default; Write is opt-in at consent; paid calls need an idempotency_key
How is it billed? From your Comfy Credits pool; free initial tokens to trySume wallet and admission; dry_run=true previews cost
What do you keep? The graph, which you can edit and rerunJob results and media URLs, recoverable by job id

What does Comfy Agent charge for?

Comfy's docs say the agent draws from the existing Comfy Credits pool and list a rate for one model: for Opus 4.8, 1.055 credits per 1K input tokens and 5.275 per 1K output tokens, with free initial tokens for everyone to try several chats. That covers the agent's own thinking; the docs section read here does not say what a workflow run then costs, so check that before you plan a batch.

On Sume's side there is no per-token agent charge in the hosted MCP: the agent's tokens bill wherever your client bills them, and Sume bills the generation jobs. You can preview a job's cost with dry_run=true or generation_admission_preview before submitting.

When does the graph matter?

When you want control a tool call hides: swapping a node, wiring a custom model, tuning a sampler, or keeping one reproducible pipeline that a teammate can open. Comfy's docs describe exactly that loop, and a graph is an artifact you own. Sume's docs describe tool calls and jobs, not node graphs, so if your process is a ComfyUI graph, Sume does not replace it. The H3 in ComfyUI or a hosted API post makes the same split for one model.

When does a tool call matter?

When the output is the deliverable and the steps are routine: a product still, a ten-second clip, a voice-over, a transcript. Sume's router picks a model when payload.model is omitted, and you read the result with jobs_status, jobs_wait and jobs_result. The same agent that edits your code can run it, with Write turned on only for that session.

There is also a middle path. Nothing stops a team from using Comfy Agent to design a graph and a coding agent with Sume's MCP for the finished assets around it, such as captions, voice-overs and thumbnails. Comfy's docs describe the agent as living on the canvas, while an MCP client lives in your terminal or editor, so the two do not compete for the same seat.

What should I check before choosing?

A few questions settle most cases. Each bullet points to the side that fits the answer.

  • Do you need a graph afterward, or just the file? Graph: Comfy. File: either, but a tool call is shorter.
  • Do you need local GPUs? Comfy Agent on local was listed as coming soon in the docs read here.
  • Do you need a human to approve each run? Comfy has Ask and Auto; with Sume, OAuth with Write off cannot submit paid work at all.
  • Do you want both? An agent can connect to both servers; the two-server post shows how.
