Claude Code alwaysLoad meta false: deferred Sume tools

Claude Code 2.1.285: a tool with _meta anthropic/alwaysLoad false stays deferred under a server alwaysLoad. What that means for Sume's tool set.

Per Claude Code 2.1.285, a tool that sets its own _meta['anthropic/alwaysLoad'] to false stays deferred even when its --mcp-config, Agent SDK or plugin server is set to alwaysLoad. For Sume, the changelog gives no setting to change; the docs say to find tools with tools_list and tools_schema, not by a fixed list.

Changelog from Claude Code's docs; Sume tool facts from MCP tools and gates and the server source, read 2026-10-01.

What does the changelog line say?

A server can be set to alwaysLoad, loading its tools up front. A single tool can opt out by setting _meta['anthropic/alwaysLoad'] to false, and the new behavior keeps it deferred. The line names three setups: --mcp-config, the Agent SDK and plugin servers. A server added with claude mcp add is not named, so check which applies to you.

Does Sume set that meta key?

A search of the server source for alwaysLoad and anthropic/ found no match, so I found no Sume tool that sets it. That means the per-tool opt-out does not apply to Sume tools as written.

How do I find a deferred Sume tool?

Search by the underscore id. The docs say live ids are underscore names and that dotted aliases like tools.list still work, because the server turns . into _ on call. For parameters, ask for tools_schema with the tool's name before any paid call.

What should I do?

Do not rely on a deferred tool being loaded. Name the tool in your prompt or skill, let tool search find it, and read the schema first. Related: Claude Code allow rules for MCP tools.
