claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop: will your Sume server import?

Claude Code can import Claude Desktop MCP servers on macOS and WSL, but only names with letters, digits, hyphens and underscores. Sume is named sume.

Yes, a Claude Desktop server named sume imports into Claude Code with claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop, as long as you are on macOS or WSL. The command accepts only names made of letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, and sume is all letters. One caveat: a Sume connector you added in Claude Desktop through the connector screen is not a config-file entry, so it may not be what the command reads.

What does Claude Code's page say?

The Claude Code MCP page (read 2026-10-03) gives the command as claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop. It says server names added through claude mcp commands can contain only letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, that Claude Desktop does not apply that restriction, and that a Desktop server whose name has any other character, such as a space, cannot be imported. It also says the feature works only on macOS and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

Which Sume names import and which do not?

Sume's documented server name is sume. These are examples of how the rule treats names you might have typed in Desktop:

Name rule applied to possible Desktop entries (rule from Claude Code docs, read 2026-10-03)
Desktop server nameImports?Why
sumeYesLetters only
sume-prodYesLetters and a hyphen
sume_mcpYesLetters and an underscore
Sume hosted MCPNoContains a space
sume.comNoContains a dot

Is a Desktop connector the same thing?

Not necessarily. Claude Desktop can add Sume as a custom connector by URL, with no claude_desktop_config.json involved, as the related post explains. Claude Code's page describes the import command in terms of Desktop servers and does not say that connector-screen entries are included. If add-from-claude-desktop finds nothing, add Sume directly instead.

claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop
# or, always works:
claude mcp add --transport http sume https://mcp.sume.com/mcp
claude mcp login sume

What do I check after importing?

Run claude mcp list and claude mcp get sume to see the status, then ask the agent to call tools_list and mcp_health, as in the MCP quickstart. An imported entry may need its own sign-in, and a fresh OAuth login is the documented way to get a grant: read-only by default, with Write opt-in on the consent page.

If you already had a sume entry, check claude mcp list after the import so you know which copy is connected, and remove any extra one.

Should I import, or add Sume fresh?

Add it fresh if you want the cleanest result. One command gives you a Claude Code entry that you control, with a known name and URL, and one login gives you a grant with the Write setting you chose that day. Import is useful when you have a long list of Desktop servers and want them all at once.

Either way, finish with the same read-only check: tools_list, mcp_health and, if you turned Write on, a dry_run=true call before the first paid create. That confirms the server, the sign-in and the scope in one pass, and it costs nothing.
