Canva Autofill on Pro and Teams: feeding it a Sume clip

Canva Autofill now works on Pro and Teams plans, and video autofill is GA. How to generate a clip on Sume, then fill a brand template field with its URL.

What changed

Per the Canva Connect changelog, the Autofill APIs now work for Canva Pro and Teams plans, where they were Enterprise only before September 21. On September 23, chart data fields and video autofill moved from preview to GA through the Get brand template dataset API. The practical result: a small team can now fill a brand template from code, with a video field among the inputs.

Sume does not call Canva. The glue is your script or automation tool: make the clip on Sume, wait for the job to finish, then pass the finished URL to Canva.

The pipeline

Step one is to read the template dataset so you know the field names. Step two is to submit the Sume clip and keep the job id. Step three is to wait: poll /v1/jobs/:id/status honoring next_poll_after_seconds, or set mode: "webhook" with a public HTTPS webhook_url. Step four is to fetch /v1/jobs/:id/result, which returns a media.sume.com URL. Only then call Canva's autofill with that URL in the video field.

Two guardrails. Never resubmit a paid Sume job because your own process timed out: reuse the same Idempotency-Key. And do not hand Canva a URL before the job is completed, or the autofill will fail on an empty result.

curl https://api.sume.com/v1/jobs/$JOB_ID/status \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY"
# when status is completed:
curl https://api.sume.com/v1/jobs/$JOB_ID/result \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY"

Caveats

Sume links are public HTTPS and do not need signing, which is what an external importer needs. Read the docs for the result shape.

  • I could not read Canva's autofill guide this week, so check its video field limits (duration, size, format) before you rely on a clip length.
  • The dataset call is 100 per minute per user, so cache the field names per template instead of reading them for every row.
  • Keep the output aspect ratio of the Sume clip equal to the template slot to avoid cropping.
