Can Sume add trending audio to a Reel? What it does and does not do
Instagram says trending audio can affect Reel distribution. Sume does not read or attach Instagram sounds; it makes original music and clip audio instead.

No: Sume cannot pick, read or attach a trending Instagram sound to a Reel. What it can do is generate an original instrumental track, give you a clip with its own synced audio, and join them into one MP4 that you upload yourself. If trending audio matters to your reach, you choose it inside Instagram.
The reason the question comes up is Instagram's own advice. The Instagram for Creators FAQ (read 2026-10-10) lists ways to reach more people with reels, and one of them reads: "Using trending audio can also impact distribution." That is a distribution statement about trending audio, so it is fair to wonder whether an API can hand you the sound. For Sume, the answer is no, and the sections below show where the boundary sits.
What Instagram's page says, and what it leaves out
Instagram's Reels feature page (read 2026-10-10) says where sound normally comes from in the app: "audio from the Instagram music library, original audio you record, and your unique sound by adding Voiceover to clips." That sentence does not mention audio files made in other tools; the sound you bake into the video you upload is a separate matter.
The same FAQ answer also tells creators to upload the highest resolution possible and to make the first 3 seconds of a reel engaging. Audio sits in that list of habits, next to engagement and relatable content. The passage I read does not say how a sound added in the Instagram app interacts with an audio track that is already baked into your uploaded file, and it does not give a number for how much reach a trending sound adds. Treat it as a nudge, not a guarantee, and do not quote a lift figure from it.
| Tip on the page | What it asks of the file you upload |
|---|---|
| Upload the highest resolution possible | Do not downscale before upload |
| Make the first 3 seconds engaging | Put the hook in the opening frames |
| Using trending audio can also impact distribution | Pick the sound in Instagram, not in the file |
| Like or reply to comments within the first 7 days | Nothing to do with the file |
What Sume has near the audio question
Three documented pieces sit close to the topic, and none of them is a trending-sound picker.
Sume's Trending videos search is a research tool. It supports only platform: tiktok in the MVP, and it returns ranked public TikTok video metadata: watch URL, cover thumbnail, description, author handle, metrics, relevance and scores. The page says it does not return raw video CDN URLs or downloadable source files, and it is not a generation model. Each accepted call reserves and captures $0.10 of Sume usage. I found no sound or music field in the documented response, and no Instagram platform value. So it cannot tell you which Reels sound is rising.
The Music Router makes original music from a text prompt. sume/music-auto picks the engine, Lyria 3.5 today. Length is controlled in the prompt (for example "a 30-second track"), because Sume rejects duration and duration_seconds. Every Music Router model charges the fixed Music price per generation, and the prompt guidance on the Music 1.0 page recommends ending with "Instrumental, no vocals."
On the video side, the Video Generation page lists generate_audio per model, and the Video Router page says Gemini Omni Flash 1.1 always renders native synced audio (the API rejects generate_audio: false).
Three honest ways to handle the audio
Pick by what you want the Reel to sound like, then decide whether to add a sound in Instagram afterwards.
- Original bed: generate a track with the Music Router, then lay it under your clips as the audio spine of a Timeline 1.0 render. The spine runs 1 to 1800 seconds and you upload the one MP4 that comes back.
- Clip audio: use a model that makes its own sound, such as Omni 1.1, and keep the clip's audio untouched for ambient or spoken beats.
- Silent master: render without a bed and choose a sound inside Instagram when you post. This is the only route where you can use whatever Instagram is promoting that day, because Sume has no access to that library.
What to check before you post
Whichever route you take, decide the sound plan before you generate, not after. A clip with native dialogue and a trending sound laid on top will fight itself, so choose one or the other per Reel. If you intend to add an Instagram sound, ask for a clip with no speech and keep the prompt about the picture. If you intend to keep the Sume audio, say so in the brief and review the file with sound on before upload. Sume's documents do not claim any measured effect on Instagram distribution from original music, and neither does this post.
