Can Claude generate transparent images? Only in two steps

No, not on its own: Claude can't generate any image, transparent or not. To get a transparent PNG from a Claude chat, connect an image tool and run two steps: generate the picture on a plain background, then remove the background, which returns a PNG with an alpha channel.

Why can't Claude make a transparent PNG by itself?

Because Claude outputs text. Anthropic's vision docs say Claude is an image understanding model only: it can interpret and analyze images, but it cannot generate, produce, edit, manipulate, or create them. A transparent image is a file whose pixels carry an alpha channel, so something other than Claude has to write that file.

How do I get a transparent image in Claude?

Add an image tool as a custom connector, then let Claude chain two tool calls. Anthropic says custom connectors using remote MCP are available on Claude, Cowork, and Claude Desktop on every plan, and Free users are limited to one. Sume has no official Claude connector: you add its hosted MCP server, https://mcp.sume.com/mcp, as a custom connector. Sume's basics page says hosted MCP still works but is not the primary path today.

• Sign in and turn Write on at Sume's consent page. Read is locked on and Write is off by default, and paid tools return insufficient_scope in a read-only session.
• Ask Claude for the subject on a plain, even background. Claude calls generate_image, waits with jobs_wait, and reads the image URL with jobs_result.
• Ask Claude to remove the background. It passes that URL to rmbg_create, which returns a cutout PNG with alpha.
• Save the cutout. Result URLs from generate_image are signed, so keep copies of the files you want.

Can't generate_image make the background transparent directly?

Not as the tool presents it. In current code, the generate_image description tells Claude that background is not served yet and that transparent or cutout output is not available on that surface: generate there, then run rmbg_create. How much does a transparent image cost?

Two charges to your Sume wallet, not to your Claude plan. Background removal is $0.0225 per image on API pricing, plus a 5.5% agent fee by default. The generated still is priced per model; ask Claude to call generate_image with dry_run=true first, which previews the cost without submitting a job. Image generation billing is all-or-nothing: a completed image is billed in full and a failed one is not billed.

What are the limits?

A few rules decide whether the two steps work:

• The image must be at a public HTTPS URL. Hosted MCP cannot read files from your laptop, so a still generated earlier in the session is the easy input.
• Every paid call needs an idempotency_key; max_spend_usd caps a call only when Claude sends it.
• The cutout is a PNG. Check its edges before you use it.
• If your Free Claude plan already uses its one custom connector, there is no room to add a second.
