Can brands promote Pins that include music? Pinterest's rule

Pinterest says brands cannot promote Pins with music unless they have permission. Export a silent version with Sume video trim and check it with the probe.

No, not without permission. Pinterest's help page on Pin types ineligible for ads says: "Unless you've received permission, brands cannot promote Pins that include music." The restriction applies in Ads Manager, the API and the Bulk Editor (read 2026-10-11). If you do not have that permission, promote a version of the video with no music in it.

Which other Pins can't be promoted?

The same page lists two more cases. I quote or paraphrase only what the page says.

What counts as music?

The page does not define it. It does not say whether a background bed under a voiceover, a licensed track or a generated one counts. If a track plays, treat the Pin as one that includes music. If you want the safest clip for a promoted Pin, ship it with no audio track at all, or with speech only if you are comfortable reading the rule that way.

How do I make a silent copy with Sume?

Video trim takes one clip and returns a new MP4 with the range you choose. Set audio to drop and the output has no audio track. The default audio value is keep. Leave start at 0 and set duration to the clip's full length, or to the length you want. Exact precision re-encodes the picture and costs $0.02 per job, and the original stays unchanged.

curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/video-trim \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: pin-silent-001" \
  -d '{
    "video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/pin.mp4",
    "start": 0,
    "duration": 15,
    "audio": "drop"
  }'

How do I confirm the new file is silent?

Run video inspect on the trimmed clip with frames: false. The probe has a has_audio boolean, and it should be false. If it is true, you are looking at the wrong artifact or the request did not send audio: drop. The probe is free of provider inference and does not re-encode anything, so it is a cheap last step before the Pin goes into Ads Manager.

If you want sound back for organic posting, keep the original file. Video trim never changes the source, so one upload gives you a silent copy for the promoted Pin and the full version for everything else. Keep the two artifact URLs labelled so the wrong one is never attached to a campaign.

One limit to remember: the page covers music only. It says nothing here about voiceover or sound effects, so do not read it as a ban on all audio, and do not read it as permission either.
